    These images are part of an exhibition displayed at the Warwick, RI Library in 2013. I had the good fortune to talk with most of these men about their lives and all were gracious enough to allow me to take their photos.

  • Bert on the Streets, Portland, OR
    Bert lives on the streets of Portland. He walked right up to me and, with those piercing eyes, asked me for a quarter. I obliged and asked him about himself. He thanked me for the two dollars and left without another word.

  • Air Force Vet at the Craft Show
    I met Glenn at the Pawtuxet, RI Gaspee Days Craft Show where he was raising money for disabled veterans. He graciously told me about the challenges facing veterans as early as the Korean War all the way up to the present day. During his time in the Air Force, he suffered injuries to his back and, as the badge on his left shoulder indicates, post-traumatic stress syndrome.

  • Bubba at the Flea Market
    Bubba was selling odds and ends from the back of his truck at a South Carolina Flea Market. It was a hot and sticky day and Bubba toasted me with his never ending shot of who knows what!

    Not even the hot sultry heat stopped this wonderful man from smiling as he opened his stall at the South Carolina Outdoor Flea Market. He loved his local Burger King and proceeded to tell me just how much!

  • Joe at Lowe’s, Warwick, RI

    I ran into Joe and his friends at Lowe's Hardware Store. They were just on their way out and I just knew I had to meet him. I asked him if I could take his portrait for my upcoming photo exhibition. He looked me up and down and said, "Hmm, you lookin' for characters?" I said, "No, I'm looking for men with character like you".

  • Portland Frank with Cigar
    I was finishing up the run of a play in Portland, Oregon and I chanced upon Frank with his unlit stogie and prominent bandage. He was standing on the corner taking in the sun and greeted me with a smile and a "Howdy". We talked for about a half an hour about his life back in Hollywood and his love of the theatre. We had a grand time!

    I never actually got a chance to speak with this man, but I was struck by the weight of the world that seemed to drag him down. He was off in a corner in the middle of a bustling street festival with dancing and singing all around him. He seemed so alone in the midst of so many.

    Palmer was frail and in another world when I saw his daughter leading him into the beautiful Japanese Gardens in Portland,OR. He reminded me of Monet wandering through his beloved gardens near the end of his life.

    I was struck by the strength and kindness in this hard working man's face. He quietly listened as I asked if I could take his photo and, with a gentle nod of his head, said yes.

  • Rolando on Broad Street, Providence, RI
    Rolando was quietly sitting with his older friend against a brick wall sharing an afternoon drink. His friend backed off when he saw me with a camera, but Rolando looked me in the eyes for a moment and kindly said, "Oh sure, go ahead and take a picture". He then went back to his own world.

    I met this gentleman at a Civil War reenactment in Lincoln, RI. He was preparing to participate in a full scale battle with the Union Army complete with cannon. His eyes mirrored the sorrow and pain that the Civil War brought to so many.

    This grand old man showed me his array of watches and TV's that were on sale at, "a great price". He then showed me photos of his wife who had perished in their house fire many years ago. It was obvious that he still loved her after all these years.
